From Dirt to Design: The Origin of Beaufort Range Designs
Share
If you’ve ever spent a morning in the Comox Valley, watching the fog lift off the Beaufort Range or feeling the damp, loamy soil beneath your tires on a fresh line, you know that the trails here are more than just paths—they are stories. They are the result of countless hours of sweat, community, and a deep respect for the rugged beauty of Vancouver Island.
For us, those stories have always been a way of life.
The "Aha" Moment on the Trail
Beaufort Range Designs became a reality from one of our many trail days. As local mountain bike riders and trail builders, we’ve spent a significant portion of our lives in the dirt. We’ve carved berms, cleared deadfall, and mapped out routes that flow through the old-growth cedar and hemlock.
We both share a deep-rooted passion for the outdoors, the trails, and the intricate patterns of nature. But the problem with a great day on the mountain is that eventually, you have to go home. We found ourselves constantly wishing we could take a piece of that experience back with us—something that captured the "flow" and the memories made in the forest.
From Shovels to Woodworking
As carpenters and trail builders, we are used to working with our hands. We understand the grain of the wood just as well as the slope of the land. During one of our build days, the conversation shifted from the trail we were building to the legacy of the trails themselves. We discussed how we could bring these maps—the blueprints of our favorite adventures—back into our homes and share them with others.
So began the journey into making trail maps as decor.
We realized that a map is more than just a navigational tool; it’s a piece of art. By combining our woodworking skills with laser-engraving technology, we started translating topographic and trail data onto beautiful, sustainably sourced cedar.
Art with a Purpose
Every piece we create at Beaufort Range Designs is a tribute to the land we call home—the Unceded Traditional Territory of the K’ómoks First Nation. Using materials like straight grain cedar, we ensure that the "outdoor" feel is preserved in every grain.
But we didn’t want to just celebrate the trails; we wanted to protect them. That’s why we give back 2% of our proceeds to local trail organizations like the United Riders of Cumberland (UROC) and the Cowichan Trail Stewardship Society (CTSS). It’s our way of ensuring that the trails that inspired our business continue to thrive for the next generation of riders and builders.
Bring Your Adventure Home
Whether it’s the technical lines of Mt. Tzouhalem, the flow of Cumberland, or a custom map of your own secret spot, our goal is to create a daily reminder that your next adventure is always calling.
We started as two builders with a vision on a trail day, and today, we are honored to help you bring the spirit of the Beaufort Range into your living room.
